How to calculate a weighted grade

Each category's score is multiplied by its weight and the results are summed. Entering a raw score and max score (say, 42 out of 50) instead of a plain percentage reduces rounding error and matches how most assignments are actually graded. The final exam calculator works backward from this same formula: it holds your current grade and its combined weight fixed, then solves for the score needed on the remaining weight to hit your target.

Calculating test grades and exam grades

For a single test or exam, enter it as one category with a 100% weight to see a plain percentage and letter grade. For a full course grade average across multiple tests, quizzes, and assignments, add each as its own row with its actual weight, so categories that count for more of your grade are reflected correctly in the total.

Letter grades aren't universal

The default scale above (90+ = A, 80+ = B, and so on) is common but not universal. Some schools use plus/minus grades, different cutoffs, or entirely different scales. Expand "Edit letter grade scale" to enter your school's actual cutoffs before relying on the letter grade shown.

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category's percentage score by its weight, then add the results. If homework is 20% of your grade and you have a 90% average on homework, that category contributes 18 percentage points (0.20 × 90) to your final grade. Enter a score and max score for each assignment and this calculator converts it to a percentage for you.

What if the required final exam score is over 100%?

It means the target grade isn't reachable with a normal exam score. The calculator tells you directly rather than showing a number above 100%, and shows the highest grade you can still reach with a perfect score.

Can I use this for a class with more than one exam?

Yes. Add each exam, assignment category, or quiz as its own row with its own weight. Weights should add up to 100% for the current-grade and final-grade calculations to be accurate.

Does this show a letter grade?

Yes, using an editable grading scale. The default is a common 10-point scale (90+ = A, 80+ = B, and so on), but you can adjust the cutoffs to match your school's actual scale.
